I find the best way to tell if someone is a Kiwi rather than Australian (accents are similar) is to ask them to say "Teddy Bear." If they are from NZ, it will sound like "Titty Beer." If they are from OZ, it will sound normal.
Try it on the next Kiwi you meet. You will find it to be totally accurate.
